What are the best tattoo machines to buy, one for lining and one for shading?
Hi,
I want to buy either a two in one good quality tattoo machine or a liner and a shader. I don't know too much about it so any extra informantion would be great! Thanks!
Please don't tell me not to go and get my tattoos done by professionals.
Don't give me your opinion on what I should do with my life only your opinions and knowledge on tattoos and equipment!!!

admin answers:
If you're apprenticing, some of the best professional tattoo irons for the money are made by Chris Sperrin, at S&S Custom Irons, out of Portland, Maine. Just go to his website, get the number, and give him or his wife Rose a call. Tell him what you want, and he'll build it for a reasonable price. There are lots of good machine companies out there. Chris and Rose's operation is top notch. He makes some awesome graywash shaders, as well as liners and color packers.

im buying a tattoo machine, but are the needles all the same for any machine?

admin answers:
There are different size needles that are used. But they are all pretty much a standard size for what they are used for.

Sharon asks…
Can I interchage coils on my tattoo machines?
I have 2 machines, both are 8 wrap coils. I've bought a 10 wrap, but havent purchased a 12 coil yet. So my question is, is it possible to put a 12 wrap coil on a previous 8 wrap machine? And if so, do I need to replace the capacitor also? Ive already been instructed about apprenticeships and everything else regarding tattooing. I'm just looking for some helpful advice regarding my questions. Thank you

admin answers:
Go to a reputable shop and ask an artist to see if he will answer this question. I suggest going to a professional shop and getting an apprenticeship, that way you would know this and wouldn't have to ask. Most likely your not going to get an answer for such a question on here, and if you do, it will most likely be wrong.

John asks…
What type of tattoo machines do you have?
I just began my apprenticeship and I just ordered my machines. I ended up going with the Paco Rollins liner and shader mainly becauise the price is unbeatable, and I heard nothing but great things about these machines. Im focused more on doing black and grey work so i wasnt interested in the color packer. Just wanting to know what others out there are using for their black and grey work, and if anyone has experienced the paco rollins machines?. Thanks.

admin answers:
Haven't tried the paco rollins machines. I like my Martinis. I use the 'headbutt' set up as a large liner, and the 'jerkoff' for a color packer/graywash shader. I use the Micky Sharpz 'Hybrid' for some applications, like when they have rhino hide for skin.

Lisa asks…
what is the difference in tattoo machines?
i know theres different machines and needles. ive already looked up soome other info and am working on a portfolio and apprenticeship. im just trying to get extra knowledge before i go out.

admin answers:
I can open up a whole can of worms for debate with it comes to tattoo machines but I'll keep it simple.
It's all about frame material & geometry.
Material can include but isn't limited to Brass, Bronze, cold roll steel, cast iron.
Geometry, (aside from everything being level, right height, right width, holes perfectly aligned) is all about prefference. For example: Three machines can have the EXACT same geometry, just different springs @ different lengths & different tensions. 1 liner, 1 shader, & one color packer.
Understanding spring thickness, length, tension, and other small things will dictate how efficient your machine will run according to its geometry.

Maria asks…
Are tattoo machines both left and right handed?
I'm considering becoming a tattoo artist, but I'm left-handed, would it be a problem?

admin answers:
I don't think it would be a problem, I'm left handed and I have done a few tattoo's with my friends tattoo gun, and he is right handed....... Hope this helps : )
